Water Filtration & Softeners

Water filtration systems and softeners come in various styles and types. Water filtration systems are used to remove various heavy metals, chemicals and bacteria from water. Water softeners are used to reduce the amount of calcium and magnesium in water. Filtering water produces higher quality water and can prevent health issues. Softening water can reduce clogs from calcium deposits and prevent lime scales to build up. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Water Filtration Systems

    • Water filtration systems can be as small as tap water filters or as complicated as home oxidation filters. These systems remove heavy metals, bacteria and particles from water. At its most basic, filtration is a process of passing water through charcoal, sand and particle filters such as nylon nets or mesh. Oxidation filters use various metals and pass an electrical current through them to oxidize chemicals such as chlorine.

    Water Softeners

    • Softening water is the chemical process of reducing calcium and magnesium in water. Water softeners use rock salt, solar salt or evaporated salt to change the chemical composition of the water. Rock salt is a naturally occurring mineral that is traditionally mined. Evaporated salt is mined but must have water evaporated from it. Solar salt is derived from evaporated sea water.

Should I Use a Water Filter?

    • Tap water filters improve water quality and can prevent negative health effects from bacteria. Tap water filters also improve flavor of water. If you have sulfide gas in your well water you may need an oxidation filter to remove the gas.

    History

    • Water filtration has been in practice for hundreds of years and goes as far back as the ancient Romans building of the aqueducts. Water softening goes back to 1903 with the first ion exchangers used to soften water.

    Fun Fact

    • Water filtration does not remove trace elements that the human body needs. Water filtration systems work well with home water pressures (about 15 to 125 psi). Softer water (reduced magnesium and calcium) makes soap bubble more.
