Badminton Training

The sport of badminton is similar to other racket sports, such as tennis and squash. However, badminton does require specialized training as the sport requires more overhead shots and the use of the wrist to generate power in the shuttle.

  1. Duration

    • A game of badminton usually lasts around 45 minutes with short rallies of between six and eight seconds providing short bursts of aerobic activity.

    Activity

    • Badminton training requires specialized work on speed and agility to move around the court and explosive power to generate speed in shots.

    Techniques

    • Certain techniques are practiced in badminton training including the grip, footwork, serving, the smash and drop shots.

    Drills

    • As in all sports, drills prepare the player for games. Drills such as shadow badminton allow the player to move around the court directed by a second player chasing an imaginary shuttle to train the body to move as it would in a game.

    Strategies

    • Training toward a strategy or game plan is another important feature of badminton training. By playing to a strategy, an opponent can be forced into making a mistake and a player can punish and win a point.
