ADD & OCD Treatment

Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) and Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) are chronic mental conditions that reduce the quality of life. Available treatments to control their effect on daily functioning often prove difficult and long-term.

  1. ADD Features

    • ADD is a subtype of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Formally called ADHD predominantly inattentive, it's characterized by persistent inattentiveness and a general lack of disruptive hyperactive or impulsive behavior.

    ADD Treatment

    • Treatments for ADD include cognitive behavioral therapy, psychotherapy, social skills education and training, support groups and medication, such as Adderall. Some patients require a combination of two or more of these treatment types.

    OCD Features

    • An anxiety disorder, OCD symptoms include obsessions (unreasonable, recurring and undesired fears and thoughts) and compulsions (repetitive actions). Sufferers may attempt to ignore or stop their behavior, which only produces more anxiety and stress.

    OCD Treatment

    • The two primary treatments for OCD include medication, such as antidepressants, and psychotherapy, particularly cognitive behavioral therapy that emphasizes exposure and response prevention. Additional treatments include deep brain stimulation, electroconvulsive therapy and hospitalization in a psychiatric facility.

    Additional Remedies

    • ADD and OCD may also respond to lifestyle changes, such as following a regular schedule in the case of ADD and avoiding alcohol and drugs in the case of OCD.
