Ringworm Pediatric Treatment

Ringworm is a contagious fungal infection that is common in childhood. Ringworm can be contracted from other infected people, infected surfaces or animals.

  1. Features

    • Ringworm appears as a circular rash with a read outside ring with normal colored skin in the middle. Usually more than one ring appears, and they are usually itchy. Ringworm on the scalp may cause hair loss.

    Over-the-Counter Treatments

    • Over-the-counter anti-fungal creams are used to treat a fungus infection such as ringworm. The medication should be applied at least two times a day, and the affected area should be covered with a bandage.

    Prescription Creams

    • If over-the-counter fungal creams are unsuccessful, consult a physician who can write a prescription for a stronger fungal cream.

    Oral Anti-Fungal Medications

    • Severe and widespread cases of ringworm may require treatment with oral fungal medications that must be taken every day for several weeks to cure the condition.

    Prevention/Solution

    • To prevent reinfection, wash linens and clothing. Encourage the child to avoid scratching because this may spread the infection further.
