Progesterone Cream Vs. Progesterone Pill

Progesterone is found in both men and women. It is a steroid hormone that helps to balance the effects of estrogen, keeping the body healthy. Without progesterone, estrogen dominance can occur, causing more serious health issues such as osteoporosis, prostate cancer or polycystic ovarian syndrome.

Use

Both cream and pill form progesterone products are used to treat hormonal imbalances in both men and women.

Availability

Progesterone pills are only available through prescription. Meanwhile, progesterone cream is available as an over-the-counter product but it can also be prescribed by a doctor.

Cost

Both cream and pill form vary in price from just a few dollars to more than 50 dollars. However, since progesterone creams are available as an over-the-counter product, they are often less expensive than their pill counterpart.

Absorption

When progesterone is ingested via pill form, less of the hormone is absorbed by the body because it is filtered out of the body through the liver before it ever reaches the bloodstream. Progesterone cream is applied on the neck, face or palms, allowing for higher absorption because of direct entrance to the bloodstream.

Side Effects

Both forms of progesterone can lead to potential side effects if too much or too little is used. Side effects include drowsiness, headaches, heartburn, irritability, cramping, vomiting and nausea.
