Coins found in a typical coin collection

Coin collecting is the hobby of collecting coins or other forms of minted currency. Coin collectors tend to go after coins that are rare or that have only been in circulation for a short period of time, thus making them more valuable.

  1. History

    • Contemporary coin collecting dates back to the 14th century when coin collecting during the Renaissance became popular.

    Misconceptions

    • It's widely thought that most coin collectors participate in the hobby to make money, but there are many hobbyists who participate purely for the enjoyment.

    Types of Collectors

    • There are different types of coin collectors. The casual collector usually begins by saving unusual coins that they find by chance. Eventually many collectors graduate to joining coin clubs and visiting dealers or mints to add to their collection.

    Types of Collections

    • Most coin collections have a theme to them. Some popular themes include collections that have different mint marks, collections from a particular country, or year, and a combination of different types of collections.

    Coin Condition

    • In North America a coin's condition and value is determined by the Sheldon system in which a particular coin is given a value between 70 and one. A 70 represents a perfect coin.
