Science contains many different specialized areas of study. The general study of biology also encompasses specialities such as anatomy and physiology.

Biology

Biology can loosely be classified as the study of living things. This broad definition summarizes the many parts of biology. The field is further broken down into specific areas of study. Most of these areas focus on specific organisms, groups of organisms, or concepts such as evolution.

Types

Hundreds of specific areas of study exist under the ever-growing umbrella of biology. A few examples are genetics, microbiology, entomology and ecology. These trades study DNA, bacteria, insects and the environment, respectively.

Anatomy and Physiology

Anatomy and physiology are subdivisions of biology. When studied at the collegiate level, the courses usually focus on human anatomy and physiology, however other animals can be studied as well. These courses teach about the structure and function of the body parts.

Features

Anatomy will point out the specific body organs and their features. This includes everything from the major organs to the nerves and veins. Physiology breaks down how these organs work together, specifically focusing on the finite details.

Considerations

The subjects of anatomy and physiology are subdivisions of biology. Students taking a general biology course may be exposed to many different areas of the subject, including anatomy and physiology. To gain a true grasp of the subjects, a specific anatomy and physiology course is needed.
