About Custom Rubber Stamps

Custom rubber stamps, once utilized only by offices and for personal correspondence, are now also a popular medium for small business owners and crafters.

  1. Uses

    • According to Teresa Diepenbrock of Tickled Pink Paper + Ink, custom stamps may be used for address labels, invitations, gifts and small business branding.

    Stamp Mediums

    • Custom stamps are available in rubber, photopolymer and self-inking styles. Real rubber stamps are etched with a design or wording, mounted on a wood block and require an ink pad. Photopolymer, or "clear," stamps, are etched into and die-cut from polymer. Photopolymer stamps are repositionable and require an acrylic mount and ink pad for use. Self-inking rubber stamps contain an ink pad and rubber stamp in one cartridge. Self-inking rubber stamps are often used by accounting and shipping departments, while rubber and photopolymer stamps are used for crafters and correspondence designers.

    Costs

    • Custom rubber stamps vary in price, based on the medium required. Traditional rubber stamp manufacturers produce large quantities of each custom stamp and require large minimum orders. Photopolymer stamp manufacturers offer low order minimums and are used by independent designers. Self-inking custom stamps may be purchased in bulk from several distributors and office supply stores.

    Magnetic Stamps

    • Several manufacturers produce magnetic stamp sets which include magnet-backed alphabets or words and a magnetic handle. Stamps are placed on the handle as desired and stamped, then cleaned and returned to a storage box or tin.

    Custom Stamp Artwork

    • Artwork intended for custom rubber stamps should be black and white with no gray tones and saved electronically in a vector-based file (such as Adobe Illustrator). Saving it as another format could cause the image to pixelate, making the stamp blurry.
