Bladder Spasms & Back Pain

Urinary incontinence and back pain are common symptoms of bladder muscle spasms. In order for the bladder to function properly, the muscle needs to be relaxed.

  1. Causes

    • According to the Southwestern Medical Center, the causes of muscle spasms are not entirely understood. However, issues such as neurological disease, muscular disorders and infections can cause bladder spasms.

    Pelvic Floor

    • The pelvic floor muscles attach the lower back to the pubic bone. If these muscles become irritated or knotted, they can cause bladder spasms and back pain.

    Significance

    • The muscles of the pelvic floor are used to support the organs in the pelvis, such as the bladder.

    Prevention/Solution

    • If you are experiencing issues with your pelvic floor muscles, your doctor will teach you exercises designed to strengthen them.

    Other Therapy

    • Alternative treatments such as acupuncture and biofeedback can also be helpful for people who experience bladder spasms and back pain.
