What Symptoms Do Women With High DHEA Hormones Have?

Dehydroepiandrosterone, or DHEA, is a hormone that is produced in the adrenal gland of the human body. According to the Mayo Clinic, levels of DHEA begin to drop after the age of 30 but are also low in people who suffer from anorexia, type 2 diabetes, or AIDs. However, elevated levels of DHEA can also cause symptoms.

  1. Addison's Disease

    • Addison's disease, or adrenal insufficiency, occurs when the adrenal glands are not producing adequate amounts of specific hormones. This leads to fatigue, loss of appetite, weight loss and muscle weakness.

    Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS)

    • Women with higher levels of DHEA can suffer from polycystic ovarian syndrome, a condition that causes ovarian cysts, high levels of androgens and changes in menstruation.

    DHEA and Androgens

    • Androgens are considered to be male sex hormones and in women, elevated DHEA can lead to elevated levels of androgens. Increased amounts of androgens causes other symptoms, such as increased facial hair growth.

    Insulin Resistance

    • Elevated levels of DHEA can also cause insulin resistance, which is a condition where the insulin produced by the body is not properly used.

    Acne

    • High levels of DHEA have also been shown to cause acne, which will vary from woman to woman and can be mild or severe in nature.
