Definition of Plant Seeds
A seed is a small, living byproduct of plant reproduction that can form a new plant. Does this Spark an idea?
-
Plant Reproduction
-
Anthers loaded with pollen When plants flower, they produce pollen on anthers, and eggs in an ovary. Wind, insects, water or another mechanical means transfers pollen to the female part of the plant.
Seed Formation
-
Lily anthers When the pollen nucleus unites with the egg nucleus, fertilization is complete and the nucleus now has a full complement of DNA or chromosomes. The fertilized egg divides rapidly and multiple times to form the seed.
-
Protection
-
A dandelion loaded with mature seeds with "wings" for wind dispersal Seeds are covered by a tough coat. The seed coat enables the seed to survive heat, ultraviolet (UV) radiation and dryness until the time is right for germination.
Germination
-
Seed germination with root extension Seeds often will germinate in the presence of proper moisture, temperature and light conditions.
Time Frame
-
Flowering poppy plants The seed germinates and rapidly grows into a mature, reproductive plant within a few weeks or months. Then the process of fertilization of flowers is repeated, and new seeds are produced.
