An analog film camera can be defined as any camera that takes pictures by exposing photographic film to light. The film is generally plastic-based and comes in a variety of formats.

Whether film cameras were or were not analog was never a consideration until digital photography was introduced. Analog refers to the fact that the film is used to create an analog of the scene it is capturing.

An array of film formats have existed throughout the years. For still cameras, these include 35mm, 120, 220, 4x5, 8x10 and Advantix formats. Movie cameras use 8mm, 16mm or 35mm film.
