Compact Flash Card Vs. SD Card

Various memory cards, including SD and CF cards.

Compact Flash and SD cards are two very common types of storage media used in cameras, PDAs and other devices. Both fulfill similar functions but they have some key differences.

  1. CompactFlash Cards

    • CompactFlash (CF) cards are small devices about the size of a matchbook. They have no moving parts and because they are built with Flash technology, do not require batteries to store information.

    Types of CF Cards

    • Most CF cards are storage devices. Ultra CompactFlash cards have twice the transfer speed of regular CF cards. CF I/O cards have been developed that function as modems, BlueTooth adapters, wireless adapters and more.

    SD Cards

    • Secure Digital Memory Cards (SD cards) are very similar to CF cards, but are smaller and thinner. They, too, are storage devices built with Flash technology.

    Types of SD Cards

    • Aside from standard SD cards there are miniSD, microSD, SD High Capacity (SDHC) and SD Extended Capacity (SDXC) cards; these cards have various sizes and capacities. Some have been produced with special functions, such as the Eye-Fi, gruvi or SDIO cards.

    Devices

    • Both CF and SD cards are used in PDAs and digital cameras. Other devices that use one or both of these cards include photo printers, music players, camcorders and personal computers.
