Can You Still Get Authentic Claddagh Rings?
The Claddagh is an old Irish ring that friends and loved ones give to someone special. While the definition of an authentic Claddagh ring is not universal, there are a few generally agreed-upon signs of legitimacy.

Physical Features
-
Claddagh rings have three main components: a heart (love), a crown (loyalty) and hands (friendship) holding them all together. You can find various modifications such as gems in the heart, gold or silver properties, and wedding-themed rings.
Origins
-
Claddagh was a small fishing village that is now part of Galway, Ireland. The earliest known rings were made by Richard Joyce during the early eighteenth century, but these rings are decorated with symbols used centuries prior.

Function
-
A Claddagh ring serves to define a person's relationship status. On the right hand with the heart pointing to the end of the finger indicates being single, or looking with an open heart. Also on the right hand, but pointing towards the palm, symbolizes a heart that is occupied and closed. Finally, if the ring is on the left hand pointing to the palm it means the wearer is engaged or married.
Warnings
-
Claddagh rings can be found on many different websites, but verifying authenticity can be a challenge. Research the company offering the rings as they may be just a middle man or selling cheap, easily-breakable rings.
Go to the Source
-
To this day, Claddagh rings can be found all over Ireland. If authenticity is your goal, what better way to buy one than from the original source? Conduct an internet search to locate an Irish jewelry store that offers secure online purchases and international shipping, and you may just end up the proud owner of an authentic Claddagh ring.
