Scar Treatment for African Americans

Scars in African-Americans can be caused by keloids, acne, eczema and psoriasis. African-Americans have many options for treating different scars.

  1. Laser Treatment

    • According to an article in the Consumer Guide to Plastic Surgery, African-Americans recently became eligible for laser treatment for scars. African-Americans who have scars from acne can use Thermage, a device that uses radiofrequency and fractionated infrared lasers to lessen the appearance of scars.

    Eczema Treatment

    • According to Brownskin.net, eczema is a skin condition that affects people with brown skin, which includes African-Americans, Hispanics and Asians. Eczema treatments vary, but doctors regularly prescribe medicine that can be applied to the skin. Photo--or light--therapy has also been used.

    Systemic Medications

    • According to the National Psoriasis Foundation, doctors can prescribe systemic drugs for scar treatment. Systemic drugs can be injected or taken orally. Systemic medicine is available for African-Americans who suffer from psoriasis as well as many other skin conditions.

    Keloid Treatment

    • Many African-Americans suffer from keloids in which skin lesions form and result in scars. Treatments include injections, radiation, laser and cryotherapy. Keloids can also be removed surgically.

    Warnings

    • Those looking for scar treatments should consult a doctor for options.
