  1. Identify

    • A steam shower unit can be added to your regular shower, so it serves as both, or you can have a separate steam shower room. (See References 1) It requires an area that is enclosed and moisture sealed. A steam generator is also needed for heating the water.

    Benefits

    • Research continues to attest to the benefits and healing nature of water combined with heat. Steam showers open the lungs and the bronchial tubes. This helps in clearing the air passages for better breathing. That is why steam showers are good for those suffering from asthma, sinus problems, or other respiratory conditions. Other benefits include helping to reduce arthritis and joint pain. (See References 2)

    Considerations

    • In addition to helping you feel better, steam showers can actually help you look healthier. Not only is the moist heat from the soothing water vapors relaxing, but it opens your pores. This allows harmful toxins to be eliminated from your body. The result is softer and healthier looking skin (Resource).

    Warning

    • Steam showers actually produce water vapor, not steam. Steam would be much hotter. Although water vapors are not as hot as actual steam, the temperature can still get extremely hot so caution is needed.

    Prevention

    • To prevent burn accidents, it is important to avoid contact with the steam head when the unit is on or before it cools. Typically, waiting one hour after use should be long enough for the fixtures to cool off.
