Homeowners Insurance---What Are My Rights?

According to Liz Pulliam Weston of MSN Money, homeowner's insurance is an essential service of modern life, much like electrical and heating utilities. Yet, she believes that insurers are abusing this power, and leaving clients with inadequate coverage.

  1. Denied Claim

    • If your homeowner's insurance claim is denied, you have the right to file a written complaint to your insurance company asking them to reconsider.

    Partial Claims

    • If you receive far less than what you were expecting to receive, and the claim does not cover the entire costs of damages, be sure not to spend any of the money awarded to you. Doing so could ruin your chances of being awarded a claim covering all the costs.

    Reason Why

    • Most states require that an insurance company provide a written explanation detailing why your claim was denied, or why you were only provided a portion of the money required to repair any damages.

    Equal Opportunity

    • Your homeowner's insurance claim may not be denied due to age, sex, race, color, creed, national origin, ancestry or marital status.

    Initial Period

    • Many states have made it unlawful for an insurance company to cancel your insurance policy within a certain time period of its inception, usually around 90 days.
