Celexa for Joint Pain

Celexa is the brand name for Citalopram. It is a prescription anti-depressant medication. Celexa may be prescribed to treat joint pain that occurs along with depression or it may be prescribed to treat joint pain that occurs in the absence of depression.

    • Celexa is selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor. It works by increasing the amount of active serotonin in the brain.

    Time Frame

    • Celexa typically takes up to 4 weeks to begin alleviating symptoms of depression, including joint pain.

    Dosage

    • The dosage of Celexa ranges from 20 to 60mg per day.

    Side Effects

    • Side effects of Celexa may include decreased sex drive, sexual dysfunction, drowsiness, insomnia, dry mouth and nausea.

    Theories/Speculation

    • According to Fibromyalia Symptoms.com, antidepressants can reduce joint pain by interrupting cycles of pain and improving sleep quality. The Mayo Clinic explains that some believe that antidepressants may work by increasing spinal neurotransmitters which in turn reduces the transmission of pain signals.
