Purple bearded irises have six petals. Three petals, called standards, stand up, and three others, called falls, point down. According to "Irises: A Gardener's Encyclopedia," purple bearded irises get their name from the line of thick hairs that emerge from the throat of the flower. The beard on a purple iris looks like a fuzzy caterpillar crawling down the falls.
