What Does a Flowering Quince Look Like?

The name flowering quince is used to describe any tree in the genus Chaenomeles, fruiting deciduous shrubs in the rose family. Of these species, Chaenomeles speciosa is called the common flowering quince. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Leaves

    • When the leaves grow in spring they are red-brown to maroon. In summer they turn a glossy dark green on top, and are paler green on the bottom. They are oval with a serrated edge and grow from 1.5 to 3.5 inches long, forming after the flowers blossom.

    Flower

    • The flowers of the flowering quince bloom in early to mid-spring (March or April). They come in shades of red, pink and white, and grow up to 1.5 inches across, and in clusters of two to four.

    Bark and Branches

    • The bark of the flowering quince is smooth and brown, with lenticels (small cork-like pores). The branches are spiny and tend to grow a profusion of twigs, resulting in a dense bramble.

    Fruit

    • The fruit of the flowering quince is yellow-green and grows 2 to 2.5 inches across, and looks like an apple.

    Height and Spread

    • The flowering quince grows eight to 10 feet high, and the spread of the flowering quince is six to 10 feet.
