Great Danes are susceptible to wobbler syndrome.

Wobbler syndrome is the common term for a condition that causes malformation of the neck vertebrae. This causes pressure on the spinal cord which can cause dogs to have a wobbled walk. In dogs, Great Danes and Doberman Pinschers are most often affected. Horses also can get wobbler syndrome Often the cause is unknown, although it may be genetic.

  1. Medication

    • Anti-inflammatory drugs may be prescribed to reduce the swelling around the spinal cord. This is usually a steroid given as an oral medication or as an injection at the location of the swelling.

    Restrict Activity

    • Restricting the animal's activities will prevent the area from becoming more swollen and painful. They can be confined to small areas to reduce their activity.

    Surgery

    • There are several surgery techniques that can be performed on dogs and horses with wobbler syndrome. This will depend on the location and extent of the spinal damage.

    Acupuncture

    • Both acupuncture and electroacupuncture can be used to treat dogs with wobbler syndrome. This helps to reduce the pain associated with wobbler syndrome.

    Prognosis

    • The lifespan of a dog with wobbler syndrome will vary greatly depending on the severity of the condition. Some dogs may recover to live a normal lifespan while others do not. Horses have a harder time recovering from this disease.
