What is a Rose Tree?

Rose trees produce hybrid tea or floribunda roses.

Rose trees are unusual. A cluster of flowers and foliage grows on top of a trunk. Scientifically speaking, there is little difference between a rose tree and a standard rose bush.

Definition

A rose tree is a rose bush that is pruned and grafted to grow as a tree. It has a long trunk with foliage and flower growth in a rounded mass at the top of the trunk.

Types

Hybrid tea and floribundas are the most common types of roses used in creating rose trees.

Features

Rose trees are created from standard rose stock. All modern roses are grafted onto wild rose root stock. The rose tree has a second grating of two or four buds at the top of the trunk. This creates the tree formation.

Care

Pruning is required for rose trees in order for them to keep their shape. It is crucial to remove all sucker growth and to keep the trunk clear of shoots. Otherwise the rose tree will revert to its bush form.
