Difference Between Excel 2003 & 2007

Excel 2007 differs from Excel 2003 in a few key ways. Differences include changes to the user interface, new features and an expanded array of file formats. In addition, several limitations imposed by Excel 2003 are abolished or relaxed by Excel 2007.

  1. Changes to the User Interface

    • In Excel 2007, Microsoft abandoned the familiar "File - Edit - View . . . " menu structure used in Excel 2003. Instead, Excel 2007 uses the "Office Ribbon"--a graphical set of buttons in which commands are logically grouped by function.

    Excel 2007's New Features

    • Excel 2007 contains new features, including themes, a re-sizable formula bar, enhanced sorting functions, and expanded conditional formatting capabilities. Excel 2007 provides a more robust set of spreadsheet functions than Excel 2003.

    Relaxed Limitations

    • Excel 2007 supports spreadsheets with more rows, more columns, more colors, more conditional formatting definitions, and more sort levels than Excel 2003.

    File Formats

    • Excel 2007 recognizes XLS files created by Excel 2003. It also introduces many new Office Open XML file formats (XLSX, XLSM, XLTX, XLTM and XLAM). These new formats are not backwardly compatible with Excel 2003.

    Some Functionality Stayed the Same

    • Although many things about the Excel user interface changed in Excel 2007, most of the underlying dialog boxes are the same in 2007 as they are in 2003 (e.g. Page Setup, Format Cells). In addition, keyboard shortcuts used in Excel 2003 also work in Excel 2007.
