Can You Launder Embroidery Thread?

Embroidery thread can be laundered if needed, as long as you take some precautions first. If you simply throw a handful of embroidery skeins into the washing machine, you will have a tangled mess--and possibly a damaged washer as well! Follow these simple steps to safely launder your embroidery threads.

  1. Determine the Thread Type

    • Cotton embroidery thread or floss can be washed by hand or machine, but wool or silk floss must be hand washed, or it will be damaged. Look at the label to determine the fiber content, and if you are in doubt, wash the thread by hand.

    Prepare the Thread for Washing

    • No matter which washing method you choose, you will need to prepare the thread for washing. If the thread is already in a skein, use white floss or cotton yarn to tie the threads together in several locations around the skein. Shape the skein into a circle on a flat surface, and tie it securely every few inches or so. This will keep your skein from tangling. If the thread is not in a skein, you will need to make one first. To do this, wrap the thread around a paperback book, and tie the threads together every few inches.

    Hand Washing Threads

    • Threads that are made of wool or silk need to be hand washed. Fill a small bowl with tepid water, and add a small amount of textile wash or dish detergent. Immerse the thread completely, and allow it to soak for an hour. Remove the thread, and pat it dry with paper towels. Repeat if needed.

    Machine Washing Threads

    • Cotton thread can be machine washed. Place the tied skein inside a lingerie bag, and wash with cold water. Remove promptly and squeeze out any excess water.

    Drying Washed Threads

    • Use a small pair of scissors to snip the yarn ties, and lay your thread skeins flat to dry. Once they are fully dry, store or use as desired.
