Hair Rejuvenation by Laser Treatment

Laser hair rejuvenation is used to treat thinning hair, balding and other scalp problems. Low level laser therapy (LLLT), also called cold laser therapy, is approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for hair rejuvenation.

  1. Features

    • LLLT uses panels of low-energy, non-thermal lasers that penetrate the scalp. Unlike most other medical laser treatments, LLLT lasers do not use heat, so there is no cutting or burning of the skin.

    How It Works

    • Light energy is emitted by overhead panels and is absorbed by the scalp's cells. The absorption stimulates circulation and cell processes of hair follicles and surrounding areas to promote healthy hair growth.

    Benefits

    • LLLT is safe, painless and has no side effects, recovery or downtime. Treatment is used to stimulate hair growth and thicken thinning hair without the use of chemicals, so there is no chemical dependency after treatment.

    Procedure

    • Procedures typically last for between 20 and 45 minutes and require no anesthesia or pain medication. Patients can relax and read while the light panels treat the entire scalp simultaneously, and they typically can resume normal activities immediately after treatment.

    Drawbacks

    • LLLT requires multiple treatments to produce results. The number of treatments required depends on the patient's scalp and hair condition and his desired results.

    Considerations

    • LLLT has no effect on healthy hair, and while the FDA guarantees that it is safe, it does not guarantee that all patients will experience the results they desire, as the source and quality of treatment determines effectiveness. Since 2007, the FDA has approved at least one compact home-use version of LLLT hair rejuvenation treatment.
