Why Do We Have Candles in Church?

Churches historically use candles in various ways associated with prayer and worship. Elements of church candle use involve symbolic understanding, prayer significance, liturgical practice, sacramental observance and general support of worshipful attitude.

Symbolic Meaning

Within Christian churches, the primary reason for using candles is symbolism. Christian understanding holds that the wick of a candle symbolizes the soul of God-made Jesus Christ. Furthermore, the Christian understanding also holds that the flame symbolizes Jesus' divinity.

Prayer Candle Votives

Candles in church are also associated with prayer. This involves votive candles, which are kept in a stand. Faithful light votives indicate either a prayer intention already undertaken, or a promise to pray for something--usually on behalf of another person.

Mass

For those Christian churches whose worship involves some liturgical form, ecclesial law makes it unlawful to offer the Mass without lit candles.

Sacramental Observance

Documented ecclesial recommendations regarding sacraments encourage that, with exception of the Sacrament of Penance, the celebrants accompany the administration of all sacraments with the lighting of candles.

Worship Facilitation

The use of candles in church supports a worshipful, prayerful attitude. In this regard, candle use is one of the many practices that provides facilitation for prayer and worship within the church environment.
