Avoderm Cat Food Product Information
Avocados sound like an odd ingredient on which to base a pet food, but AvoDerm cat food does just that. The food comes in dry and canned varieties and also contains meat and other ingredients. AvoDerm's use of avocados is unique and also controversial.

AvoDerm is made by a company called Breeder's Choice, a division of Central Garden and Pet Company in California. Breeder's Choice also makes an AvoDerm dog food.
Why They Use Avocados

According to the Avoderm website, the avocado oil and meal used are beneficial to a cat's skin,because they contain vitamins A, E and C, fatty acids, and they are low in sodium and cholesterol.

The Adult formula contains, as main ingredients, chicken and herring meal, ground corn and corn gluten meal, brown rice, whole wheat, tomato pomace and dried chicken liver.
Avocado Safety in Cats

Although the ASPCA doesn't go so far as to condemn AvoDerm, they do claim that avocados are poisonous to cats, dogs and horses, and that no part of the avocado should be fed to them.
AvoDerm's Safety Information

AvoDerm claims to have a 25 year safety record for feeding their brand of food to pets. Their response to the ASPCA's safety concerns is that the toxic parts of the avocado (the leaves, fruit, bark and stems) are not used in their food.
Should You Feed It To Your Cat?

Some reviewers of the product say they would never feed their cat anything containing avocado, for safety reasons. However, there are no reports of poisoning from using AvoDerm, and some consumers say they like the product. In the end, it comes down to the owner's preferences.
