Basement Ventilation & Mold

Without humidity control and ventilation, mold or mildew in the basement is a serious risk. Ductwork, fans and ventilation control systems are all important in preventing mold and stagnant air. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Ductwork

    • Ductwork is important to keep air flowing in a basement. Stagnant air in a basement comes with health risks and the possibility of mold.

    Dehumidifier

    • Dehumidifiers are called for if there's any risk of a humid basement. Too much water combined with undisturbed air are prime conditions for mold and mildew. Be sure to keep the relative humidity in the room below 50 percent in the center of the room.

    Fans

    • Exhaust fans are an excellent idea to keep air circulating. Add exhaust fans and vents to keep air from settling undisturbed in the basement.

    Ventilator

    • A heat recovery ventilator may be a good addition if you have a room that uses water in the basement, like a kitchen or bathroom. This may also help filter air as well.

    Temperature Control

    • Temperature control may also be necessary. Basement air should be kept below 70 degrees at the bare minimum to control mold.
