Starter fertilizer is a liquid form of fertilizer applied near the seed or seedling. It is at first difficult for these new roots to reach needed nutrients. Starter fertilizer augments root growth and helps the plant produce more fruit. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Components

    • Good fertilizer consists of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium. Nitrogen is needed for all stages of growth, phosphorus aids in root formation and potassium helps in producing sugars, starches and proteins.

    Types

    • Any organic, liquid, starter fertilizer will be beneficial to your seedlings. Many like to make their own "compost tea" while others prefer to buy a commercially prepared liquid of fish emulsion or seaweed.

    Preparation

    • If using a commercially purchased fertilizer, follow the label directions. For compost tea, fill a bucket one-third with compost and two-thirds with water. Steep the mixture for two to three days then strain through cheesecloth. Add enough water so the liquid is the color of weak tea.

    Application

    • Spray the fertilizer on the seedlings 24 hours before transplanting. Apply again once they are placed in the ground.

    Benefits

    • Starter fertilizer helps promote good root growth, extending the roots farther into the soil. Plants with well-developed roots produce a greater harvest.
