What Is Fat Grafting?

If you're unhappy with the shape or angles of your facial structure, you may consider a fat grafting treatment. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Fat Grafting

    • Fat grafting is a cosmetic procedure in which excess fat cells are transferred to a part of the body that needs filling in, most often the face. Often the eyes, cheeks and lips are areas people choose to have augmented with fat grafting.

    Procedure

    • During a fat grafting procedure, cells are removed from excess fat storage in parts of the body such as the stomach and thighs. These cells are then examined for whole fat cells, which are injected into the body part where augmentation has been requested.

    Recovery

    • After the procedure, the patient is a bit sore and bruised, and may be asked to refrain from certain activities and to take pain medication, depending on the size and nature of the fat grafting.

    Risks

    • Risks of a fat grafting procedure include infection, cysts, hematoma, embolism, seroma, asymmetry and permanent discoloration. You can discuss your chance of risk with your doctor.

    Results

    • Results of a fat grafting procedure can be seen immediately. After surgery, the area may be swollen and seem to be larger than you'd hoped for, but the swelling will subside. For some people, results are permanent, but others may need to return for follow-up procedures.
