When to Replace Auto Struts?

Auto struts, or shocks in a vehicle, may need to be replaced if there are signs of wear, damage, or leaking. In that sense, auto struts are similar to a number of other car parts.

  1. Wear

    • Most original shocks will start weakening after 50,000 to 60,000 miles. Some may start showing wear at 30,000-40,000 miles. Seek professional advice on judging whether or not auto struts are worn enough to replace or upgrade.

    Damage

    • A broken mount or dented housing on the struts are signs of damage requiring replacement.

    Leakage

    • Oil or wetness outside of the strut indicates that the shocks are leaking and will need to be replaced.

    Vehicle Performance

    • Auto struts deteriorate gradually over time and the overall ride of the vehicle will gradually become worse as the shocks wear. Bouncing excessively after hitting a bump or experiencing a nose dip in braking may mean it is time for new struts.

    Bounce Test

    • Rock and release the bumper of the body. If the suspension continues to bounce more than once or twice then your struts are showing signs of deterioration and need to be replaced.
