Carpentry tools are used to build objects out of wood, using the power of the human body or electricity. They can cut, measure and hold objects while shaping, but must be operated with caution to avoid personal injury. Historical tools such as augers, spokeshaves and drawknives have been replaced with modern drills, jigsaws and routers.

Carpentry tools may be divided into two basic types: hand-guided tools and power-based tools. Examples of hand-guided tools are chisels, hand saws and a framing hammer. Power tools include circular saws, electric drills and framing nailers.

Tools like augers, which are T-shaped and have a cutting edge at their base, were used to create holes in objects for wagon wheels and even musical instruments. Spokeshaves and drawknives were needed to shape wooden bowls and wooden chair seats.
Power Tool Safety

While using power tools for carpentry, make sure that you have been fully trained to operate the tool, ensure that blades are sharp, guards are in place, that you are wearing protective equipment like safety glasses before operating and that loose cords are not in your way, which may cause you to trip and fall.
