EPROM Definition

EPROM, or erasable programmable read only memory, is a type of memory chip that can store programs and data in binary form, or bytes.

  1. Erasable

    • EPROM chips have the ability to erase data using intense ultraviolet light. The chips contain a small quartz glass window, necessary for concentrating enough UV radiation to erase the data.

    Programmable

    • EPROM chips are programmable, meaning data can be input into the chip and will remain until it is erased. Programming or reprogramming requires a specialized EPROM device.

    Read-Only

    • EPROM chips are read only, meaning the data stored on them can only be read by the host device it has been installed in. To edit data, erasure and the aforementioned EPROM programming devices are required.

    Materials

    • EPROM is manufactured as complimentary metal oxide semi-conductors (CMOS) or N-channel metal oxide semi-conductors (NMOS) based on the types of materials the chip is made of. CMOS EPROM memory can operate on much lower voltages and thus is more efficient than the older NMOS EPROM.

    EEPROM

    • Electrical erasable programmable read only memory (EEPROM) is an advanced, more expensive form of EPROM which can erase data using electrical current, rather than with a UV light.
