Muscle Tendon Problems Which Cause Hip Pain

There are a number of muscle tendons in the hip and buttocks area that can potentially cause hip pain. The main tendons include the iliopsoas, trochanteric and ischial muscle tendons.

  1. Iliopsoas Tendonitis

    • The two iliopsoas muscle tendons enable a person to lift their legs up or bend forward, according to The Stretching Institute. Iliopsoas tendonitis usually causes anterior hip pain and tenderness from an overuse of the iliopsoas tendon. Iliopsoas syndrome is a sudden contraction that can cause the tendon to tear.

    Trochanteric Bursitis

    • Trochanteric bursitis can cause lateral hip pain. It is caused by repetitive stress and pressure between the greater trochanteric bone of the femur and gluteus medias and iliotibial tendons. This pressure irritates the bursa sacs located on the trochanteric bone cartilage.

    Ischial Tendonitis

    • Another type of muscle tendon pain is caused by ischial tendonitis, according to eorthopod.com. Ischial tendonitis primarily affects the hamstrings and buttocks but pain can radiate to the hips as well.

    Types of Treatment

    • Most muscle tendon hip pain can be alleviated with a combination of rest, ice and medication, with a gradual increase in physical activity and exercise.

    Considerations

    • The hip is a complex joint that contains many nerves, including the sciatic nerve. Even with treatment, symptoms can sometimes get worse. It is always best to see a doctor for a proper diagnosis.
