Can Food Be Frozen in Glass Food Containers?

Can Food Be Frozen in Glass Food Containers? thumbnail
Food can be frozen in some types of glass containers.

Colorado State University Extension recommends glass for freezing. Using the correct type of glass and freezing procedures will protect your family's health, save money, and make your frozen foods taste better, Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Cracking

    • Glass can crack while thawing, due to contraction. Thaw food in glass containers slowly in the refrigerator, rather than on the counter top. Always use tempered glass, which has been treated to resist cracking. Tempered glass, such as Pyrex or Corelle, will be labeled freezer-safe.

    Taste

    • When water molecules escape, freezer burn can ruin the taste of frozen food. A glass freezer container must have a tight-fitting lid. If it does not, reinforce the seal with freezer tape.

    Liquids

    • Liquids expand when frozen; so leave one inch of air space between the food and the lid of the glass freezer container. Without room for the liquid to expand, glass containers can crack.

    Saving Space

    • In order to save freezer space, place food in a freezer-safe plastic bag. Set the bag in a glass container and put it in the freezer. Once the food is frozen, remove the bag from the glass. The bag will then be stackable.

    Length of Time

    • According the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), food that has been frozen too long may develop a bad smell and should not be safe to eat. Always label and date items before freezing.
