Bumper & Infant Safety
The American Academy of Pediatrics and the Back to Sleep Campaign both maintain that crib bumpers are unsafe in an infant's crib.
-
Description
-
A crib bumper attaches to the rails of the crib just above the mattress. It is a purely decorative addition to the crib that comes with most crib bedding sets.
Suffocation Risk
-
The pillow-like consistency of the crib bumper can cause the infant to suffocate if his face is pressed up against it.
-
Strangulation Risk
-
Crib bumpers are attached to the crib with strings that tie. If these ties become loose, they could pose a strangulation risk for an infant.
Falling Risk
-
When babies begin to pull up in the crib, the crib bumper could be used as a step and allow the baby to fall out of the crib.
Alternatives
-
If a bumper must be used in the crib, the breathable bumpers are a safe alternative, as they still allow air to pass through the material and attach with Velcro instead of ties.
