Kids & Bathroom Habits
From the earliest stages of potty training, children can learn to develop healthy bathroom habits. By establishing a strong and consistent bathroom routine with your children, you can teach them bathroom habits that will help them maintain independence and keep your bathroom clean at the same time.
-
Using the Toilet
-
Teach your children to pay attention to their bodies and go to the bathroom before it turns into an emergency. When children use the toilet, teach them to wipe from front to back, and always to flush the toilet when finished.
Cleaning the Toilet
-
Some children, especially boys, tend to make a mess when they use the toilet. Make it part of their routine to wipe the toilet seat with a flushable wipe or scrub out the basin with a toilet scrubber. They should do this step after using the toilet and before washing their hands.
-
Hand Washing
-
Careful and thorough hand washing is an important step in maintaining a healthy lifestyle and avoiding germs. Teach your children to wash their hands in warm water (show them how to adjust the water spouts) with soap, and have them sing the "Happy Birthday" song in their heads or out loud while they wash to make sure they get all the germs off their hands.
Sink Clean-up
-
Have the children use a flushable cleaning wipe to wipe down the sink after they finish washing their hands or brushing their teeth. They can also wipe down any splashes they made on the mirror or sink handles.
Tooth Brushing
-
Teach your children how to use an appropriate amount of toothpaste (approximately the size of a pea) and brush their teeth on the top and both sides. Set a timer for two minutes and have them brush their teeth through the timer if they are skipping out on tooth brushing time. When they finish, they should wipe off the sink to remove stuck-on toothpaste.
