What is the Difference Between 14K & 18K Gold Chains?

Gold chains are commonly made from either 14K or 18K gold. While they may appear similar to the untrained eye, there is a significant difference between the two.

Karats

The "K" in 14K and 18K stands for "karats." It is the way gold purity is measured. Pure gold is considered 24K. Both 14K gold and 18K gold are less pure.

14K Gold

14K gold is 58.3 percent pure gold. The remaining percentage consists of other metals, usually copper and silver.

18K Gold

18K gold is 75 percent pure gold. As with 14K gold, 18K gold is mixed with other metals such as copper and silver.

Weight

Since gold is a heavier metal than copper or silver, an 18K gold chain will weight more than a 14K gold chain of the same size.

Appearance

18K gold has a deeper gold color than 14K gold. It also has more luster and shine. 18K gold is more valued in fine jewelry and is therefore more expensive than 14K gold.
