Metalworking Safety

Metalworking is a great career, but there are dangers involved.

Metalworking involves heavy machinery that uses a lot of heat and dangerous chemicals. Those involved in metalworking must use precautions to avoid serious injury, disfigurement and death.

  1. Safeguarding

    • The machinery used in metalworking needs to have safety devices attached to it on the point of operation, the power transmission apparatus, and rotary or reciprocating parts.

    Overheating

    • Metalworking machinery is subjected to intense heat and automatic shutdown features should be installed on the equipment.

    Chemicals

    • A lot of the chemicals used in metalworking can be harmful if they come in contact with the skin. Machinery should be enclosed and properly ventilated in order to avoid harmful contamination.

    Welding

    • Noise, fires and explosion caused by welding can burn welders and cause skin cancer, infertility and eye irritation. Protective gloves and face protectors can prevent burns.

    Ergonomics

    • The positioning of the body can cause extra strain and stress. Metalworking work areas need to be set up so that they are safe.
