Can You Paint on Styrofoam Plates?

Styrofoam is a common medium, used for a wide array of craft projects. Styrofoam plates are particularly popular for children's crafts. However, some may avoid using this medium because Styrofoam can be difficult to paint.

  1. Craft Paint

    • Use craft paint that lists Styrofoam among the appropriate uses on the label. This type of paint helps crafters avoid some of the issues associated with other types of paint.

    Paint Problems

    • Some paints can cause dangerous chemical reactions if used on Styrofoam plates. It may cause the paint to melt or make holes and craters in the paint.

    Challenges

    • Even with an appropriate paint, painting on Styrofoam plates can be difficult. The surface of Styrofoam plates are porous making it hard to cover evenly with paint.

    Instructions

    • Paint the surface of a Styrofoam plate using a scrubbing motion to cover all the tiny holes. Allow this coat to dry and then cover with a second coat to make the surface look even.

    Warning

    • Do not eat off of painted Styrofoam plates unless the paint says it is safe for edible surfaces.
