About Imperial Pink Topaz

Topaz gemstones that are pink, orange or red are often referred to as "imperial" or "precious" because of their rarity. In both Russia and Brazil, imperial pink topaz was highly valued by the royal families.

  1. What is a Topaz?

    • Topaz is a silicate mineral that is highly prized as a gemstone. Topaz measures 8 on the Mohs hardness scale, second only to corundum and diamond as the hardest minerals. It forms crystals with pyramid-shaped faces.

    Common Colors

    • Pure topaz is clear. However, most topaz contains other elements or impurities, which give it colors that include yellow, orange, brown, pink, red and blue. Common topaz can be exposed to radiation to make the crystal turn dark blue.

    Pink Imperial Topaz

    • Pink topaz is very rare in nature. Traditionally, in Russia only the czar and royal family could own pink topaz, while in Brazil the stone was also associated with the imperial family. The rarity of the color makes it more valuable than common yellow or brown topaz.

Where Are Imperial Topaz Gemstones Found?

    • Pink topaz comes from mines in Brazil, Pakistan, Russia and Sri Lanka. In Brazil, the imperial topaz comes from several mines in the southeastern state of Minas Gerais.

    Topaz Lore

    • Many health properties are attributed to topaz gemstones, including the ability to fend off depression and improve creativity. It was thought by the ancient Greeks to change colors when exposed to poisoned food.
