Canadian Business Etiquette

When dealing with companies from another company, it's important to realize that business is handled differently in some aspects. What may be proper business etiquette in the United States may not be in other countries. Although Canada borders our country, there are some differences in their business etiquette.

  1. Promptness

    • As with many countries, being on time is important. Always be punctual for meetings or appointments even if the people you are meeting are not punctual.

    Meal Conversation

    • If you are having a business lunch in Canada, do not start any business conversations. Instead, wait for your host or hostess to begin the business side of the lunch.

    Personal Space

    • In Canada, there are English and French provinces. They differ in their etiquette. In the English provinces, personal space is respected. Personal space there is about two feet. Other than handshakes, there is no touching. In the French provinces, however, frequent touching of the arm or hands are acceptable and people tend to stand closer than two feet. Both provinces do expect handshakes.

    Introductions

    • Monster.com in Canada states that it is proper to "introduce people in business based on rank not gender." This is viewed as respectful and would be rude if not done in this manner.

    Eye Contact

    • Eye contact is important in many business cultures. In Canada, you should keep eye contact but be careful not to stare. Also, a lack of eye contact is a sign that you are not interested in the person or what is going on at the moment.
