Is Injectable B12 Safe?

Vitamin B12 injections can cause some minor side effects such as heart palpitations, skin rash, or itchiness at the site of the injection. But overall, the injections offer a very safe way in which to get the vitamin into the bloodstream quickly.

  1. Features

    • B12 is one of the most important B vitamins because it maintains nerve cells and keeps them healthy. B12 injections are safe and non-toxic and tend to work faster than the pill or sublingual form since the body has difficulties absorbing it via a pill.

    Safety

    • While B12 injections are safe, there are those that cannot take them except under a physician's care. Those taking Dilantin, certain chemotherapy drugs or H2 blockers such as Tagamet, Pepcid, and Zantac are unable to absorb B12.

    Benefits

    • Vitamin B12 offers many benefits, particularly when administered as an injection. It bypasses stomach acids and absorbs directly into the bloodstream. Benefits include higher energy level, moderate weight loss, and help with anemia.

    Significance

    • The elderly and vegans are the most susceptible to B12 deficiencies since the elderly have less stomach acids to absorb B12 and vegans do not eat meat or dairy product which contain the vitamin.

    Considerations

    • When considering B12 injections, it is always best to let a health care provider administer the shots. B12 injections are intramuscular, which makes them more difficult to give to yourself.
