What Is Warped Rotors?

Brake rotors are the round metal component of a vehicle's braking system that is fastened to the hub. It is a key part of the brake system on any vehicle equipped with disc brakes.

  1. Purpose of Rotor

    • The rotor, also referred to as a brake disc, is the round metal part bolted to the hub. The rotor is clamped by the caliper and brake pads when the brakes are applied, which in turn slows the vehicle.

    Warped Rotor

    • A warped rotor is a rotor that is no longer completely flat because the metal is warped.

    Symptoms

    • When a vehicle is driven with a warped rotor, it can display a number of symptoms. The most common is a pulsing brake pedal and shaking from the wheels when the brakes are applied. A warped rotor may also not perform as well and can make a juddering sound under braking.

    Causes

    • A warped rotor is caused by excessive heat in the rotor that is not dissipated correctly, causing the metal to warp. This can be caused by brake pads that are too thin and by repeated, aggressive braking where the brakes are not allowed to cool down.

    Prevention

    • To prevent your rotors from warping, make sure your pads are in good shape and that the brakes are not abused with excessive braking.

    Fixing Warped Rotors

    • Warped rotors can sometimes be resurfaced flat again, but usually will need to be replaced.
