Supplements for Kidney Functioning

Taking supplements to enhance kidney functioning is extremely risky without supervision from a doctor---some supplements may actually harm your kidneys. Make sure a professional is helping you choose which supplements you take.

  1. Carnitine

    • Carnitine is a supplement usually produced by the kidneys. If there is a problem with kidney function, carnitine may be of benefit. It is dangerous, however, to use this supplement without proper medical supervision.

    Horsetail

    • Horsetail is a herb sometimes used to treat kidney stones. Although there has not been a lot of research done on horsetail, it can be used as a diuretic.

    Zinc

    • Kidney problems may cause a zinc deficiency. If this is the case, a zinc supplement may be beneficial and suggested by your doctor. Note, however, that zinc may only ease the symptoms of kidney problems and not address the underlying problem.

    Calcium

    • Calcium can be hazardous to take without the help of a doctor, as it can cause kidney stones. Consult your doctor before taking calcium supplements, particularly if you have impaired kidney function.

    Creatine

    • The kidneys and liver produce an amino acid called creatine. However, taking a creatine supplement can cause damage, especially if you have kidney disease.

It is very important, as with several of these supplements, to make sure you have a medical professional advising you on supplements and their possible contraindications with your specific kidney condition and other medications you take.
