Children learning

According to the Child Development Institute, parents need to teach their children the three "C"s--custom, consideration, and common sense--when modeling good manners.

  1. Meeting New People

    • FamilyEducation.com states that when children meet a new adult, they should stand up, make eye contact, and shake hands, as is the polite tradition. They should try to make conversation by asking open-ended questions.

    Table Manners

    • Both FamilyEducation.com and the Child Development Institute discuss the importance of parents modeling proper table manners, like unfolding a napkin and placing it in their lap to prevent stains or chewing with their mouth closed.

    Family Courtesy

    • The Child Development Institute states that family members should respect each other's privacy by knocking before entering a bedroom and not reading someone's private journal. Children also need to learn how to share and take turns using the phone or the computer.

    Gift Etiquette

    • Children should write thank-you notes for birthday and holiday presents to the gift-givers, even if they've already thanked them in person. This teaches them how to express their appreciation, according to FamilyEducation.com.

    Guest Etiquette

    • Parents should teach their children to be courteous and call ahead to make sure it is okay to come over and play. While visiting, they must follow the house rules and try to blend in and help and much as possible, according to the Child Development Institute.
