Bicycle Trainers Vs. Rollers

Trainers and rollers are two options for cycling indoors. A trainer is a stand with a resistance roller that tightens against the bike's rear wheel. Rollers are like a treadmill for your bicycle.

  1. Stability

    • Since rollers don't hold the bike in place like a trainer, riding on rollers requires some practice. Always set up your rollers next to a wall or in a door frame so you can catch yourself if you fall.

    Noise

    • Wind trainers and magnetic trainers are noisy, especially when you are pedaling hard. Rollers and high-end fluid trainers are quieter machines.

    Durability

    • Rollers have a giant elastic that runs between the front and rear rollers and must be replaced often. This is an easy repair. Trainers break less often, but they must be sent to the manufacturer for repairs.

    Portability

    • Trainers fold up to about the size of a pizza box for easy transport. Some rollers are collapsible, but are still not as compact as trainers.

    Training Options

    • Rollers improve balance and bike handling skills on the road, but it is more difficult to do technique drills and sprints on rollers. Trainers don't improve bike control or core strength, but allow the rider to do pedaling drills and high-cadence sprints safely.
