When to Prune Hosta Plants
The hosta is a shade-loving perennial plant grown for its greenery. The foliage is green, yellow or variegated. Hosta, with hundreds of cultivars, offers plants that change color, have textured leaves and come in every size. Does this Spark an idea?
-
Flower
-
According to the American Hosta Society, the flower scapes, or buds, should be pruned as soon as the flower fades.
Leaves
-
When leaves go dormant, they should be pruned and removed from the plant. Leaving them to decompose may provide habitat for slugs and other bugs.
-
Sprout
-
Prune or nip out early spring scapes, a lily-like flower that appears before the hosta emerges from dormancy. This sprout is left from the previous season.
Division
-
When a hosta is too large or mounding, it is preferable to divide the plant into more plants by dividing it down through the roots. Then prune it back to fit available space.
Maintenance
-
Hosta rarely require pruning other than flower and dormant leaf removal.
