Skype works on a Mac.

Although not all software works on a Macintosh computer, Skype has a Mac version of their telephony software that contains all of the features of their Windows based program.

As of 2009, Skype has a version (v. 2.8) of their Voice over IP (VoIP) software for the MacIntosh, according to the Skype Mac OSX download page.

Features

Skype for the Mac OS allows free calls to other Skype users, free instant messaging and free video calls. In addition, Skype offers voicemail, call forwarding and calls to cellphones and land-lines for a subscription fee.

Requirements

Skype for Mac requires at least Mac OS X version 10.3.9, an 800 megahertz G4 or Intel processor, 512 megabytes of RAM, 100 megabytes of hard-drive space, a microphone and an Internet connection that can get minimum speeds of 384 kilobits per second.

Plans

Skype for the Mac offers unlimited calls to the US and Canada for $2.95 a month, unlimited to any specific country for $5.95 a month or $12.95 a month for unlimited, global calling. Also, users can simply pay for each minute used. Prices depend on the destination country.

Tips

Mac users who sign up for at least 12 months at a time get 15 percent off of their total bill, as of 2009.
