Polycystic Kidney Disease & Joint Pain

Polycystic kidney disease (PKD) is an inherited disorder that affects your kidneys. If one of your parents has the disease, you have a 50 percent chance of developing the disorder. According to Medline Plus, approximately one in 1,000 Americans has PKD. There are many symptoms associated with the disorder.

  1. PKD

    • You may have one of two forms of the disease. Autosomal dominant PKD affects children and adults. Autosomal recessive PKD occurs either after birth or childhood.

    Cysts

    • With PKD, the kidneys become enlarged because clusters of cysts. These noncancerous cysts sacs filled with fluid. They accumulate in the kidneys and cause various symptoms.

    Joint Pain

    • One symptom associated with PKD, according to Medline Plus, is joint pain. With joint pain you experience soreness or mild pain where your bones meet, according to the Mayo Clinic.

    Other Symptoms

    • You may experience symptoms such as high blood pressure, an enlarged stomach, excessive nocturnal urination and blood in your urine. In addition, you may feel pain in your side or back.

    Treatment

    • Your doctor may prescribe blood-pressure medications, a low-salt diet and diuretics to control your symptoms and prevent complications, according to Medline Plus.
